Tusker Day is Exactly One Month Away….

It hit me earlier this year that I have been hosting parties in Nairobi for five years now. It feels like it was just a day ago I was chatting with the lovely Susan Deiters as she attempted to convince me to host my first party ever at her restaurant, Cafe des Arts (now Mediterraneo Gigiri) Ahh.. Those were epic parties!

Halloween 2

Fast forward to early May this year. I am sitting down looking at the coming year to see which dates I could host which themed parties. September 22nd stood out particularly because it is Elephant Appreciation Day. Now if you live in Kenya only one thing pops to mind when you think of elephants, and this happens to be Tusker beer.

The patriot in me could not resist thinking that any Elephant Appreciation Day should go hand in hand with Tusker Beer Appreciation Day, hence the reason Tusker Day falls on 22nd September.

And then tragedy hit. On June 13th 2014, Tsavo Trust announced the death of Satao, Kenya’s largest African male elephant. He was slaughtered by poachers for ivory. Satao’s tusks were so huge they almost reached the ground. Sometimes he would lean the tusks on the ground in order to rest his head and get some sleep.

Satao The Great Kenyan Tusker

Satao Slideshow 1

Satao belongs to an elite group of elephants who have the necessary genetics to grow tusks this big. These elephants are called Tuskers. They are on the brink of extinction. As you read this, there are only 11 tuskers left in Tsavo, the late Satao’s home, out of a herd of 11,000 elephants.

There are other Tuskers in Africa, but my guess is they are less that 50 in total. We are looking at a species dying right in front of our eyes. Therefore, it is only fair that we pay homage to Satao, and the remaining Tuskers on Tusker Day (Elephant Appreciation Day)

Isilo the Great South African Tusker

That said, I propose we celebrate Tusker Day annually on September 22nd for the following amazing reasons:

1. To honor, protect and fight for Tuskers (+elephants) worldwide which will be extinct in 15 years if poaching continues at such an alarming rate. Find out how you can join the cause by having a look at our campaign, Satao’s Herd.

2. To celebrate Africa’s first annual drinking holiday ever. Tusker beer has been the highlight of many who have fond memories of Africa. The Dutch have King’s Day, the Irish have St. Patrick’s Day, the Germans have Octoberfest and now Africa has Tusker Day.

I now leave you with the amazing elephant and Tusker beer pictures which friends have sent me from all corners of the world. I cannot wait to hear what your plans are for Tusker Day this year! Do send me an email with your thoughts on akinyiadongo (@) tuskerday (.) com

There are a couple of parties I have hosted in the past, of which the Playboy party I did last year was one of my top favourites. I must say it was Shrina that urged me to host it. After she bullied me for a couple of days I had no choice but to give in 🙂

One random afternoon I am with Richard and the crew working on my tan on the stunning Diani beach (Yes, Africans work on their tan too.. :-)) when I get a message requesting for a meeting in Nairobi with a new club that was opening soon.

We arrange for a Skype call/meeting the next morning during which I meet the gentlemen behind this new spot. They charmingly convinced me to host the opening night which I oblige to because they are such awesome people!

Fast forward to the opening day and I am back in Nairobi making the final plans with the boys running around. The end result is a lovely cozy invite only night with fantastic guests.

Ebony Lounge is a venue for those who cherish their public privacy, but who aren’t innately private – i.e. the kind of people who want to dance their feet off on a Friday night but don’t want the world knowing about it. The entrance has an age restriction of 25 and above. It is open seven days a week with theme nights for the evenings. Here are a few of them:

Last Thursday Miranda and I were really excited as we set up our first Nairobi InterNations get together in 2014. We held it at 88, The Pan Asian Restaurant and Tambourin at Villa Rosa Kempinski in Nairobi. This lovely restaurant officially opens next month (February 2014) with a selection of Vietnamese, Cantonese, Japanese and Thai cuisine. Allow me to share some pictures of our delightful evening with you…

Brazil Day in Africa, Kenya, Nairobi 2013…..

Akinyi's Exclusive Moments, My Events, Nairobi Nightlife, Wicked Weekends in Africa

After a break hosting parties in Nairobi, it was only fair that I kicked it off on the highest note possible. As luck would have it, this year’s Brazil Independence Day fell on a Saturday (September 7th 2013.) Now who am I to walk away from an epic reason to party like Brazil Day…

Brazil Flag

Every year Brazilians worldwide take time out on September 7th to celebrate Brazil day. The date celebrates Brazil’s Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal on September 7, 1822.

The first challenge was finding a venue which would be open and compatible. After much deliberation, Seven Lounge & Grill in Village Market turned out to be most suitable.

The second step was to get the consensus and blessings of our Brazilian friends in Nairobi. They were quite enthusiastic about the idea and turned up in large numbers. At this point I must express my gratitude to Antonio and Renata for their fantastic input.

The third hurdle was executing the event. Now Seven Grill & Lounge is a restaurant with an adjacent bar/lounge area within a shopping complex. We had to find a way to make it feel like a club yet maintain its element. This was achieved by sectioning it up using fabric based on colors of the Brazilian flag. I guess by now it is pretty obvious that the dress code was green and yellow. The best dressed male and female won a bottle of wine each.  🙂 Below is Spencer, my right hand man buried in meters of fabric on the way to the party…

I was lucky enough to have some phenomenal volunteers who lent us their strength and moral support for the whole set up. Spenser was a lifesaver while Mo and Hayley were perfect at the delicate wrapping process. And only heaven knows where I would have been without Stef and Shrina….

The first time I met Phillip Yao was last year through my sweet friend Elena. He spoke of doing something interesting in the coming days. Little did I know he was planning to set up a charming, cozy Thai restaurant along UN Avenue in Nairobi. I was flattered when he asked me to host the opening night of the restaurant…

When the restaurant was almost ready, Phillip flew to Thailand and interviewed 300 Thai chefs, after which he picked the best three.

The menu consists of main dishes based on Green Curry, Red Curry, Massaman Curry and my favorite, the Yellow Curry. There is a wide range of dessert too.

Heather & Chris’ Wedding at Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari Club, Nanyuki

My Events, Wicked Weekends in Africa

I had the pleasure of coordinating Heather & Chris’ wedding last week at Fairmont’s Mt. Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki. As the wedding plans were underway, I remember Heather mentioning that some close friends and family were not able to make it all the way to Nanyuki from various parts of the world (especially Canada and New Zealand.) This piece is for them 🙂

We arrived at the club on Friday evening after a two and a half our road trip from Nairobi. The immediate family assembled for the rehearsal dinner at 7:00 pm which was very lively.

The next morning I had breakfast with Heather’s mother, Heather’s two nephews, her aunt Sue and Laura (One of the most fun human beings I have ever met)

After breakfast, I headed out for Rose Garden, the venue of the wedding ceremony. On the way I bumped into Sharon, the hair stylist for the bridal entourage.

At the wedding venue, preparations were furiously underway with everyone pulling their weight to ensure that everything was set by 2:00pm, the time the ceremony was to begin.

After Rose Garden I made my way to the bridal suite to check on Heather. On the way I met the rest of the gang settling down for breakfast.

078

I also came across Chris (the groom) and Nick (the best man) sorting out a few things at the club’s reception.

083

I also caught up with Laura and Paola stepping out to check out the maze in the Club’s expansive gardens.

086

Eventually I found the bride almost ready….

091

After taking note of what the girls needed, I crossed over to the reception to meet up with Rita, the charming lady behind the wedding cake. We settled Rita in the Club’s kitchen thanks to Niall (Mt. Kenya Club’s GM.)

Here is a brief description of InterNations: “InterNations is the first international online community for people who live and work abroad. As a network based on trust, we enable our members to interact with other global minds in a similar situation, with comparable interests and needs. InterNations reaches out to the international community: diplomats, members of IGOs and NGOs, foreign correspondents, expatriates employed by multinational companies and their family members. We also cater to the interests of local residents with strong ties to this community.

If you are new to Nairobi, send me an email and we will be glad to welcome you to the family. 🙂 akinyiadongo@africahomesteads.com
